The quiet light of the screen tonight betrayed the heat of many millions of imperceptibly small cells of color humming away at some frequency you might calculate if you were so inclined. When she walked outside that day, the sky seemed ever so slightly dimmer. There were figures scattered along the horizon, oriented vertically, horizontally, parallel or perpendicular--whichever ways in which the remaining laws of this world allowed a body to be. But other than that everything seemed normal.

She walked up the street toward the convenience store shimmering a heavenly fluorescence in the distance, her feet narrowly avoiding every crack and tapping away at a beat in her ears that seemed to warble between 95 and 105 BPM. Not five minutes into her venture for snacks or smokes or whatever it happened to be that she risked the outside world for, a man tumbled into view--seemingly into existence--from the next alley ahead wielding a halogen flashlight. The clear definition of his bones at each joint spoke volumes of his life's story. She didn't notice.

A dry puff of smoke escaped his lips as he turned to her and asked for directions. She stopped to think, but before she could realize that he hadn't mentioned to where, he was gone. Only the soles of his boots were still visible as he floated away.

"Fucking tweakers," she lamented, as she resumed her quest.
